On December 1st, 2025, Toan Nguyen joined the group as a PhD student. He has a background spanning artificial intelligence and human-centred computing. His research focuses on brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) and AI-driven systems built on physiological sensing.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Can Tho University of Technology in Vietnam, graduating within the top 15% of his cohort. He later completed his Master’s degree at Hongik University in South Korea on a fully funded scholarship, specialising in computer vision. During this period, he also completed a research internship at Yuan Ze University in Taiwan, supported by Taiwanese government funding. Before joining TU Dortmund, Toan spent nearly two years as a graduate researcher at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in Australia, where he contributed to projects on EEG-based dementia detection as well as imagined and silent-speech decoding for AI-driven healthcare applications.

With over four years of research experience across AI and HCI, Toan has already built a notable record of contributions. He has authored and co-authored more than ten publications in well-known AI and HCI venues, such as ACM UMAP, ACM UbiComp, IEEE TNSRE / Sensors Letters, ACM ETRA, ACL, ACM AIES, ACM Multimedia, and PAKDD. Moreover, he received the Bridging Divides Research Grant from Toronto Metropolitan University in Canada in recognition of the societal relevance of his work, and his recent research was awarded Best Paper at ACM ETRA 2025.

“AI innovation means developing intelligent systems that understand people, empower growth, and meaningfully improve life.”

This motto reflects his commitment to advancing AI research that serves human needs, enhances well-being, and strengthens the connection between technological progress and human development.
