Biography

Fiona Lau is a PhD student in the Human-AI Interaction group at TU Dortmund University and the Research Center Trustworthy Data Science and Security. She works on human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence with a focus on human-centered generative AI and interactive AI systems. Her work explores how people can meaningfully collaborate with AI systems and shape their behavior through interactive feedback and co-creation. Her research interests include generative AI, human-AI co-creation and user-centered AI systems that support human agency.

Prior to her PhD, she received her M.Sc. in Human-Computer Interaction from LMU Munich. In her master’s thesis, she investigated human-in-the-loop image generation for fashion and developed an approach to iteratively adapt generated outputs to individual user preferences using Bayesian optimization. During her studies, she gained experience in both academia and industry. As a research assistant in the AI lab at HFF Munich, she contributed to research and teaching on generative AI. She also worked as a fully employed software engineer at Gestigon (a Valeo brand), where she developed AI-driven touchless interaction systems for vehicles, contributing to multiple accepted patents.
